Chief Brody has always been a favorite- besides “we’re gonna need a bigger boat” I loved when he poured himself the larger glass of white from Hoopers fancy bottle. He’s just one of the best complicated characters.

You didn’t like Peter Benchley’s Jaws? Really. It’s not like the movie there is a lot more too it. It’s been a long time since I read it. No he didn’t base it on the 1916 attacks but hey certainly provided inspiration since people began to wonder if the 1916 shark was hunting people on the shore.

The biggest difference is Jaws and most things are a great white shark. The 1916 attacks were a bull shark not a great white. Bull sharks can go river to ocean where whites cannot and bull sharks can be more aggressive but the white shark looks more menacing so everyone likes to feature them over bull.

Close to shore is a historic novel on the 1916 attacks but one of the better documents I’ve read.

There is another book just recently released but I haven’t read it or remember the name.

Great article.

Hi! Thanks for reading… honestly I hated the fact that Hooper slept with Brody’s wife… that ruined the book for me because I couldn’t imaging her doing that after watching the movie. Also, if you ever have the time - the documentary about the making of the movie is excellent. So many little tidbits of info that I didn’t know about. Is the book Twelve Days of Terror? I just found that one - and there’s another documentary just about the attacks out now too. See? Curiosity never end with this story!! I miss you!! 😘

Yeah. I can understand that. But you know movies can stray from the books. Maybe in this case that was a good thing.

Yes I think I saw some of that but would love to check it out also.

Twelve days of terror I think is newer. “Close to Shore” is a lot older and written by a man from NJ. It was a good novel about everything you mentioned in the tour but with a bit of historical fiction around it. Like a story of what it might have been like living in those twelve days.

I always found this story fascinating especially as the shark attacks have been more publicized.

I miss you too and wish I had gone on that tour with you.

I didn’t realize the experts now think it was a great white. I’ve never heard of whites in the creek but supposedly there have been bull sharks in Parker’s creek, the end of the street where I grew up.
